Text: Chapter 76: Al-Insan (Humans)

76:1

هَلْ أَتَىٰ عَلَى الْإِنسَانِ حِينٌ مِّنَ الدَّهْرِ لَمْ يَكُن شَيْئًا مَّذْكُورًا

Is there not a period of time when each human is nothing yet worth mentioning?¹

76:2

إِنَّا خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ مِن نُّطْفَةٍ أَمْشَاجٍ نَّبْتَلِيهِ فَجَعَلْنَاهُ سَمِيعًا بَصِيرًا

˹For˺ indeed, We ˹alone˺ created humans from a drop of mixed fluids,¹ ˹in order˺ to test them, so We made them hear and see.

76:3

إِنَّا هَدَيْنَاهُ السَّبِيلَ إِمَّا شَاكِرًا وَإِمَّا كَفُورًا

We already showed them the Way, whether they ˹choose to˺ be grateful or ungrateful.

76:4

إِنَّا أَعْتَدْنَا لِلْكَافِرِينَ سَلَاسِلَ وَأَغْلَالًا وَسَعِيرًا

Indeed, We have prepared for the disbelievers chains, shackles, and a blazing Fire.

76:5

إِنَّ الْأَبْرَارَ يَشْرَبُونَ مِن كَأْسٍ كَانَ مِزَاجُهَا كَافُورًا

Indeed, the virtuous will have a drink ˹of pure wine˺—flavoured with camphor—

76:6

عَيْنًا يَشْرَبُ بِهَا عِبَادُ اللَّهِ يُفَجِّرُونَهَا تَفْجِيرًا

˹from˺ a spring where Allah’s servants will drink, flowing at their will.

76:7

يُوفُونَ بِالنَّذْرِ وَيَخَافُونَ يَوْمًا كَانَ شَرُّهُ مُسْتَطِيرًا

They ˹are those who˺ fulfil ˹their˺ vows and fear a Day of sweeping horror,

76:8

وَيُطْعِمُونَ الطَّعَامَ عَلَىٰ حُبِّهِ مِسْكِينًا وَيَتِيمًا وَأَسِيرًا

and give food—despite their desire for it—to the poor, the orphan, and the captive,

76:9

إِنَّمَا نُطْعِمُكُمْ لِوَجْهِ اللَّهِ لَا نُرِيدُ مِنكُمْ جَزَاءً وَلَا شُكُورًا

˹saying to themselves,˺ “We feed you only for the sake of Allah, seeking neither reward nor thanks from you.

76:10

إِنَّا نَخَافُ مِن رَّبِّنَا يَوْمًا عَبُوسًا قَمْطَرِيرًا

We fear from our Lord a horribly distressful Day.”

76:11

فَوَقَاهُمُ اللَّهُ شَرَّ ذَٰلِكَ الْيَوْمِ وَلَقَّاهُمْ نَضْرَةً وَسُرُورًا

So Allah will deliver them from the horror of that Day, and grant them radiance and joy,

76:12

وَجَزَاهُم بِمَا صَبَرُوا جَنَّةً وَحَرِيرًا

and reward them for their perseverance with a Garden ˹in Paradise˺ and ˹garments of˺ silk.

76:13

مُّتَّكِئِينَ فِيهَا عَلَى الْأَرَائِكِ ۖ لَا يَرَوْنَ فِيهَا شَمْسًا وَلَا زَمْهَرِيرًا

There they will be reclining on ˹canopied˺ couches, never seeing scorching heat or bitter cold.¹

76:14

وَدَانِيَةً عَلَيْهِمْ ظِلَالُهَا وَذُلِّلَتْ قُطُوفُهَا تَذْلِيلًا

The Garden’s shade will be right above them, and its fruit will be made very easy to reach.

76:15

وَيُطَافُ عَلَيْهِم بِآنِيَةٍ مِّن فِضَّةٍ وَأَكْوَابٍ كَانَتْ قَوَارِيرَا

They will be waited on with silver vessels and cups of crystal—

76:16

قَوَارِيرَ مِن فِضَّةٍ قَدَّرُوهَا تَقْدِيرًا

crystalline silver, filled precisely as desired.

76:17

وَيُسْقَوْنَ فِيهَا كَأْسًا كَانَ مِزَاجُهَا زَنجَبِيلًا

And they will be given a drink ˹of pure wine˺ flavoured with ginger

76:18

عَيْنًا فِيهَا تُسَمَّىٰ سَلْسَبِيلًا

from a spring there, called Salsabîl.

76:19

وَيَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَانٌ مُّخَلَّدُونَ إِذَا رَأَيْتَهُمْ حَسِبْتَهُمْ لُؤْلُؤًا مَّنثُورًا

They will be waited on by eternal youths. If you saw them, you would think they were scattered pearls.

76:20

وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَ ثَمَّ رَأَيْتَ نَعِيمًا وَمُلْكًا كَبِيرًا

And if you looked around, you would see ˹indescribable˺ bliss and a vast kingdom.

76:21

عَالِيَهُمْ ثِيَابُ سُندُسٍ خُضْرٌ وَإِسْتَبْرَقٌ ۖ وَحُلُّوا أَسَاوِرَ مِن فِضَّةٍ وَسَقَاهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ شَرَابًا طَهُورًا

The virtuous will be ˹dressed˺ in garments of fine green silk and rich brocade, and adorned with bracelets of silver, and their Lord will give them a purifying drink.¹

76:22

إِنَّ هَٰذَا كَانَ لَكُمْ جَزَاءً وَكَانَ سَعْيُكُم مَّشْكُورًا

˹And they will be told,˺ “All this is surely a reward for you. Your striving has been appreciated.”

76:23

إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا عَلَيْكَ الْقُرْآنَ تَنزِيلًا

Indeed, it is We Who have revealed the Quran to you ˹O Prophet˺ in stages.

76:24

فَاصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تُطِعْ مِنْهُمْ آثِمًا أَوْ كَفُورًا

So be patient with your Lord’s decree, and do not yield to any evildoer or ˹staunch˺ disbeliever from among them.

76:25

وَاذْكُرِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلًا

˹Always˺ remember the Name of your Lord morning and evening,

76:26

وَمِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَاسْجُدْ لَهُ وَسَبِّحْهُ لَيْلًا طَوِيلًا

and prostrate before Him during part of the night,¹ and glorify Him long at night.²

76:27

إِنَّ هَٰؤُلَاءِ يُحِبُّونَ الْعَاجِلَةَ وَيَذَرُونَ وَرَاءَهُمْ يَوْمًا ثَقِيلًا

Surely those ˹pagans˺ love this fleeting world, ˹totally˺ neglecting a weighty Day ahead of them.

76:28

نَّحْنُ خَلَقْنَاهُمْ وَشَدَدْنَا أَسْرَهُمْ ۖ وَإِذَا شِئْنَا بَدَّلْنَا أَمْثَالَهُمْ تَبْدِيلًا

It is We Who created them and perfected their ˹physical˺ form. But if We will, We can easily replace them with others.

76:29

إِنَّ هَٰذِهِ تَذْكِرَةٌ ۖ فَمَن شَاءَ اتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِ سَبِيلًا

Surely this is a reminder. So let whoever wills take the ˹Right˺ Way to their Lord.

76:30

وَمَا تَشَاءُونَ إِلَّا أَن يَشَاءَ اللَّهُ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا

But you cannot will ˹to do so˺ unless Allah wills. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

76:31

يُدْخِلُ مَن يَشَاءُ فِي رَحْمَتِهِ ۚ وَالظَّالِمِينَ أَعَدَّ لَهُمْ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا

He admits whoever He wills into His mercy. As for the wrongdoers, He has prepared for them a painful punishment
